Root Canal Treatment: Is It Really as Scary as Everyone Says?

Root Canal Treatment: Is It Really as Scary as Everyone Says?
I am Dr. Emily, principal dentist at Picasso Dental Clinic in Vietnam, with over 15 years of experience and more than 50,000 patients treated from all corners of the world. If there is one dental treatment that makes people nervous just hearing the name, it is root canal. I want to set the record straight right now: root canal treatment is not the nightmare it has been made out to be. In fact, it is one of the most tooth-saving procedures in dentistry, and most of my patients are genuinely surprised by how comfortable and straightforward the experience is.
What Is a Root Canal and Why Would You Need One?
Your tooth has a soft inner part called the pulp, which contains the nerve and blood vessels. When bacteria get deep into the tooth through a crack or a large cavity, they can infect this pulp. This is usually what causes that severe, throbbing toothache that does not go away on its own. When the pulp gets infected, the only way to save the tooth is to remove the infected tissue from inside, clean out the canals thoroughly, and seal everything up so bacteria cannot get back in. That process is called root canal treatment. Without it, the infection spreads, the tooth often has to be extracted, and the bacteria can spread to surrounding teeth. A root canal is essentially the treatment that saves your tooth from being pulled out. Visit our root canal treatment page to understand the full process.
Does Root Canal Treatment Actually Hurt?
I will be completely direct. During the procedure: no, it does not hurt, because we numb the area completely with local anesthetic before we start. You may feel pressure, but not pain. After the procedure, once the anesthetic wears off, the tooth and surrounding area might feel tender for a few days. This is normal. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually all that is needed, and it settles down quickly. The reason root canals have such a painful reputation is mostly because people associate the treatment with the pain they already felt from the infection before coming to the dentist. The treatment itself is the cure, not the cause. Root canal treatment relieves pain by removing the infected tissue that was causing it.
What Happens Step by Step During Root Canal Treatment?
First, we numb the tooth and surrounding area so you are completely comfortable. Then we place a thin rubber sheet around the tooth to keep it clean and dry during the procedure. We make a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the inside. Using very fine instruments, we carefully remove the infected pulp tissue from inside the tooth and its canals. We clean and shape the canals thoroughly, then fill them with a safe material to seal them. Finally, we seal the opening in the tooth. In most cases, a crown is placed over the tooth afterward to protect it. This is why we often discuss porcelain crowns alongside root canal treatment during our consultations.
What Happens If You Do Not Get a Root Canal When You Need One?
If an infected tooth is left untreated, the infection does not go away on its own. It gets worse. The pain usually intensifies. The infection can spread to the surrounding bone and other teeth. An abscess can form, which is a painful pocket of pus that can become very serious. In some cases the infection can spread to the jaw, neck, or even other parts of the body. Avoiding a root canal does not make the problem disappear. It makes it much bigger and more expensive to fix. And at the end of that road, the tooth usually has to come out anyway. Getting treatment early is always the better choice for your health, your comfort, and your wallet.
Can You Eat and Live Normally After a Root Canal?
Yes, absolutely. Most people go back to their normal daily activities the same day or the day after. You should avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the crown is placed, just to protect it. Eat soft foods for the first day or two if there is any tenderness. After the crown is placed and everything has settled, you can eat and function exactly as normal. Many patients tell me that after the treatment, they feel better than they have in a long time because that nagging toothache is finally gone. If you are getting a root canal as part of broader dental care, it also helps to book a routine checkup and cleaning so we can assess the health of your other teeth at the same time.
