Dr. Emily’s Guide to Dental Implant Systems at Picasso Dental Clinic
Why Your Choice of Implant System Actually Matters
“Dr. Emily, which implant brand will you be using for my procedure?”
That’s one of my favorite questions to hear during a consultation. It tells me you’ve done your homework and you’re not just choosing a clinic based on whoever has the lowest advertised price.
After more than a decade of placing dental implants as Picasso Dental Clinic’s principal dentist, I’ve narrowed my practice down to three implant systems: Nobel Biocare, Straumann, and Osstem. Not five systems. Not ten. Just these three.
This wasn’t a random decision. Each system earned its place through proven clinical results, extensive research backing, and most importantly, consistent success with my patients. Let me walk you through why I chose these specific systems and how I determine which one is right for each patient.
The Vietnamese Dental Implant Market: What You Need to Know
Vietnam’s dental implant market has exploded over the past decade. Walk through any dental supply conference in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, and you’ll encounter representatives from dozens of implant manufacturers: Korean brands, European systems, Israeli companies, even some Vietnamese manufacturers.
But availability doesn’t equal quality.
I’ve treated patients who came to Picasso after experiencing failed implants from brands I’d never even heard of. These systems often have attractive websites, convincing marketing materials, and notably low prices. Initially, everything appears fine on X-rays. But six months later, problems emerge: bone loss, inflammation, sometimes complete implant failure requiring removal and starting over.
The reality is that some clinics select implant systems primarily based on cost rather than clinical performance. Lower implant costs mean higher profit margins. But your jawbone doesn’t respond to profit margins. It responds to biocompatibility, surface treatment technology, and precision engineering.
That’s why I made a commitment several years ago: Picasso Dental Clinic would only use implant systems I’d confidently place in my own family members’ mouths.
Why I Exclusively Use These Three Implant Systems
Nobel Biocare: The Gold Standard for Complex Cases
Nobel Biocare holds a special place in implant dentistry history. They pioneered the concept of osseointegration (the process by which bone fuses to titanium implants) back in the 1960s. This isn’t just marketing heritage, it represents 50+ years of continuous research, refinement, and clinical data.
I turn to Nobel Biocare when facing complex clinical situations:
Limited bone volume cases where other systems might require extensive grafting first. Nobel’s implant design and surface technology often allow me to work with existing bone structure more effectively.
Immediate loading protocols when patients need teeth attached to implants right away rather than waiting months for healing. Nobel’s predictability in these situations is unmatched in my experience.
Compromised healing situations such as patients with diabetes, autoimmune conditions, or other medical factors that might affect osseointegration. The extensive research on Nobel implants in medically compromised patients gives me confidence in recommending this system.
Full arch reconstructions where I’m replacing all teeth in an entire jaw. The precision and reliability matter tremendously when multiple implants need to work together perfectly.
The TiUnite surface technology is what particularly convinced me to keep Nobel in my clinical toolkit. This specially treated titanium surface promotes faster and more predictable bone integration compared to traditional machined surfaces.
I recently treated a 68-year-old patient with osteoporosis and limited bone density. Two other dentists had told her she needed extensive bone grafting procedures before implant placement, adding months to her treatment timeline and significant cost. After careful CT scan analysis and treatment planning, I determined we could use Nobel implants with her existing bone structure. Three months after surgery, she was eating normally again. That’s the level of predictability Nobel provides.
Straumann: Swiss Precision for Aesthetic Excellence
When I’m replacing front teeth or working in the aesthetic zone where appearance matters as much as function, Straumann is typically my first choice.
Front teeth present unique challenges. Everyone sees them when you smile, talk, or laugh. More importantly, everyone notices the gum line around them. A successful front tooth implant isn’t just about function, it’s about creating results so natural that nobody can tell which teeth are implants.
Straumann’s Roxolid material, a titanium-zirconium alloy, allows for narrower implant diameters without compromising strength. This becomes crucial when working in confined spaces or with patients who have naturally smaller jaw structures. The flexibility to use a narrower implant often means the difference between an optimal result and a compromised one.
But what truly distinguishes Straumann in my practice is their SLActive surface technology. This hydrophilic (water-attracting) surface promotes faster bone cell attachment compared to traditional hydrophobic surfaces. In practical terms: my patients experience faster stability, quicker healing times, and I achieve better aesthetic outcomes with the soft tissue architecture.
Last year, I placed Straumann implants for a young professional who lost two front teeth in a cycling accident. Six months post-treatment, you literally couldn’t distinguish which teeth were implants. The gum contour, color match, and overall appearance were indistinguishable from her natural teeth. That’s the level of aesthetic excellence Straumann enables me to deliver.
Is Straumann more expensive than other options? Yes. But when you’re investing in replacing visible front teeth and you want truly natural-looking results, the investment is worth it.
Osstem: Where Quality Meets Value
Not every patient needs a premium Swiss or Swedish implant system. And I’m completely comfortable saying that, because quality doesn’t always mean “most expensive.”
Osstem is a Korean implant system that has genuinely impressed me over the past five years. I’ll admit I was initially skeptical. A mid-range Korean system competing with established European brands? It sounded like a compromise waiting to disappoint.
But after placing hundreds of Osstem implants, the clinical results speak for themselves. For straightforward cases with good bone quality, healthy patients, and posterior (back) tooth replacements, Osstem performs comparably to the premium European systems.
Osstem has invested heavily in research and development. Their SA surface technology is solid. Their manufacturing precision meets high standards. And most importantly, my patients consistently do well with these implants.
Here’s how I typically approach multiple implant cases for budget-conscious patients: Straumann implants for visible front teeth where aesthetics are paramount, and Osstem implants for back teeth where function and longevity matter more than appearance. This approach optimizes both clinical outcomes and financial investment.
I also confidently recommend Osstem for patients replacing back molars who have healthy bone density and good oral hygiene habits. There’s no clinical reason to charge premium prices when a quality mid-range system will deliver equivalent long-term results.
Why System Familiarity Matters More Than Brand Recognition
Here’s an insight that might surprise you: the implant brand matters significantly less than your dentist’s depth of experience with that specific system.
I’ve placed hundreds of implants from each of these three systems. I know precisely how Nobel implants behave during placement in different bone densities. I know the optimal torque values for Straumann in various clinical situations. I can feel the subtle feedback when an Osstem implant reaches ideal primary stability.
This familiarity translates directly into better outcomes for patients.
I’d rather be a true expert in three systems than merely competent with ten. Every implant system has unique characteristics: specific placement protocols, particular instrumentation requirements, and individual quirks that you only learn through extensive hands-on experience.
When you deeply know a system, you can make real-time micro-adjustments during surgery that optimize success probability. These adjustments, subtle shifts in angulation, precise depth modifications, ideal torque application, come from placing hundreds of similar implants, not from reading a manual.
Additionally, when you limit your practice to a few systems, you maintain comprehensive parts inventory, have reliable backup options, and your entire surgical team becomes experts in those specific systems. My surgical assistant knows which instruments I need before I ask for them. That seamless workflow efficiency matters when we’re working in your mouth.
How I Determine Which System Each Patient Needs
When you’re sitting in my examination chair and we’re planning your implant treatment, several factors guide my system recommendation:
Bone quality and quantity assessment. Healthy bone with good density and volume? You’re likely an excellent Osstem candidate. Compromised bone requiring maximum predictability? We’re discussing Nobel Biocare.
Tooth position and aesthetic demands. Front teeth visible in your smile? Straumann typically provides the best aesthetic results. Back molars? Probably Osstem unless complicating factors are present.
Medical history considerations. Conditions like diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or medications affecting bone healing push me toward Nobel Biocare. I want the most predictable system when healing capacity might be compromised.
Budget reality and financial constraints. I won’t recommend a 50 million VND treatment plan when a 30 million VND approach will achieve equivalent results. However, I also won’t compromise your long-term success to minimize short-term costs.
Lifestyle factors and risk assessment. Heavy tobacco use? I’ll probably recommend Nobel for additional security. Meticulous oral hygiene with no risk factors? Osstem will serve you excellently.
Every treatment recommendation is individualized. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, which is why I’m skeptical when I see clinics advertising “implants starting at 15 million VND” without even examining patients first. How can you possibly quote an appropriate treatment without proper assessment?
Understanding Implant System Pricing
Let’s address the question everyone has but many feel uncomfortable asking: why do implant prices vary so dramatically?
Premium implant systems represent a significant investment for dental clinics, but that cost difference exists for legitimate reasons. When you see a substantial price variation between implant systems, you’re seeing the reflection of very different levels of research, development, manufacturing precision, and clinical support.
But the implant component itself represents just one piece of your total investment. Premium systems include:
Superior surgical instrumentation designed specifically for that implant system, allowing for more precise placement and better outcomes.
Comprehensive technical support when unusual situations arise during treatment planning or surgery. I can contact company representatives who provide expert guidance based on extensive clinical experience.
Extensive training requirements for both me and my surgical team. I’ve completed multiple advanced courses for each system, representing significant time and financial investment in expertise.
Decades of research and development that created the surface technologies, precision engineering, and design innovations these systems incorporate.
When you invest in a Nobel Biocare or Straumann implant, you’re not simply paying for a piece of titanium. You’re benefiting from 50+ years of osseointegration research, surface technology that required millions to develop, precision engineering measured in microns, and companies that will still exist in 20 years if you need support or replacement components.
You’re also paying for accountability. If something goes wrong with a Nobel, Straumann, or Osstem implant (rare but possible), clear warranty protocols and replacement procedures exist. These companies stand behind their products with more than just marketing promises.
I’ve treated patients who chose budget implants at other clinics, then sought my help two years later after implant failure. They ultimately spent more money overall on removal, bone grafting, healing time, and replacement implant placement. Sometimes they’re also dealing with bone loss that makes the second attempt more complicated than the first procedure would have been.
The cheapest option isn’t always the most affordable in the long term.
What Premium Implant Systems Actually Provide
Patients frequently ask what specifically makes a premium implant superior to a budget option. It’s a fair question that deserves a detailed answer.
Advanced surface technology represents the primary differentiator. Premium implants have undergone decades of research into optimizing titanium surfaces for bone cell attraction and attachment. Nobel’s TiUnite, Straumann’s SLActive, and even Osstem’s SA surface aren’t marketing terminology. They represent genuine scientific advances in how quickly and thoroughly bone integrates with implant surfaces.
Budget implants typically use basic machined or sandblasted surfaces. Sometimes they work. But the long-term success rate data tells a different story about predictability and longevity.
Precision engineering and manufacturing tolerances matter more than most patients realize. Premium implants maintain tolerances measured in microns. The connection between the implant and the abutment (the component that holds your crown) must be nearly perfect. Any microscopic gap creates space for bacterial colonization, potentially leading to peri-implantitis and implant failure.
I’ve examined budget implants where components simply don’t fit together properly. You can actually feel the connection wobble. That should never happen with a device designed to last decades inside your body.
Long-term clinical data and research backing gives me confidence when planning your treatment. Nobel Biocare has published clinical data spanning 50+ years. Straumann maintains extensive research on challenging cases, systemic diseases, and long-term survival rates across diverse patient populations. When I tell you an implant has a 97% success rate at 10 years, I’m citing actual longitudinal studies, not making optimistic estimates.
Newer or budget brands lack this historical data. They might perform adequately initially, but we don’t have reliable information about how they’ll behave 15 or 20 years from now. I’m not comfortable using my patients as long-term test subjects for unproven systems.
Questions I Encourage You to Ask During Your Consultation
When we’re discussing your implant treatment plan, these are questions I genuinely want you to ask:
“Why are you specifically recommending this implant system for my case?” I should be able to explain my clinical reasoning clearly. If I can’t articulate anything beyond “it’s what we use” or “it’s more affordable,” that’s a red flag.
“How many implants from this specific system have you personally placed?” Experience matters tremendously. I’ve placed over 200 Nobel Biocare implants, approximately 300+ Straumann implants, and at least 400 Osstem implants. Those numbers represent real clinical experience, not theoretical knowledge.
“What does the long-term research show about this implant system?” I maintain relevant clinical studies and can show you 10-year and even 20-year success rates, data on specific complications, and research on situations similar to yours.
“What happens if complications arise?” You should understand that I’ll take care of you throughout the entire process. We have clear protocols, warranty support when applicable, and I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be here to manage any issues that develop.
I genuinely appreciate when patients ask challenging questions. It demonstrates we’re on the same team, working toward the same goal: a successful implant that lasts decades and improves your quality of life.
Making the Right Decision for Your Situation
If you’re considering dental implants, here’s my professional advice:
Don’t make this decision based solely on finding the lowest price. A properly placed implant should function successfully for 20+ years or more. Investing appropriately now to ensure long-term success is wiser than dealing with failed implants and costly replacements later.
Choose a dentist who truly knows their implant systems. Ask how many they’ve placed with each system. Ask why they’re recommending what they’re recommending for your specific situation. If their answers seem vague or focused only on cost, consider other options.
Understand that Nobel Biocare, Straumann, and Osstem each have appropriate clinical applications. You might not need the most expensive option available, but you definitely don’t want the cheapest option either.
Most importantly, find a dentist you trust. Someone who will be honest about what you genuinely need versus what would simply be nice to have. Someone who will still be practicing and available in 10 years if you need them.
That’s the approach I take with every patient at Picasso Dental Clinic. Your implant isn’t going into some anonymous patient’s mouth. It’s going into YOUR mouth, and I take that responsibility very seriously.
